Practicum Sessions
The practicum is a full SIXTY hours of real teaching practice, lesson planning, observation, self-evaluation, talks, workshops, and other professional development activities that are personalized to suit your needs.
Our goal is to create a friendly and relaxed team environment where we will provide you with the best pedagogical resources to use with children who are learning English.
Upon successfully completing the practicum, you will be given a certificate which states that you have completed sixty hours of practicum work in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL).
Real Teaching Practice
The teaching practice component for the practicum
sessions is provided by the Top Hat ESL program.
Top Hat ESL provides free lessons for local immigrant
children. The program is run cooperatively with
the London Central Children's Library in Canada.
NOTE: In other countries the teaching practice will take place in real classrooms
in private or public schools with children who are learning English.
Do I have to take the practicum session to be certified?
No, the practicum session is a completely optional component of the CertTEYL course.
Only those who have little or
no teaching experience must take the practicum session in order to be certified.
NOTE: Most of our practicum sessions include both novice and experienced teachers. Even teachers with more than ten years of experience can benefit from our practicum sessions.

Enrollment Process
It's easy to enroll in the practicum sessions!
- Enroll in the CertTEYL online course.*
- In the "comments" section of the enrollment form please tell us your preferred date and location for the practicum session.
- After starting the CertTEYL online course, you will be contacted to make a deposit of US$400.00 for the practicum session.
The cost of the sixty hour practicum session is US$1200.00 in Canada, but there may
be a surcharge for other countries. Please contact us for exact fees.
*The CertTEYL online course is a prerequisite for the practicum sessions.
Focus on Personal Improvement
In the teacher practice we do not evaluate the performance of the teacher.
We help you to improve your didactic skills and teach you how to learn from
classroom experiences. It is up to other types of companies to evaluate
professionals — we concentrate on preparing teachers for whatever
they will face in teaching English to children.
An important component of the practicum session is to reflect
on the methods that you currently use or to explore methods that reflect your teaching style. You will exchange ideas with other participants and benefit
from the guidance of more experienced tutors and teachers.
You will not have to go through the nerve-wrecking experience of having somebody
directly observing and evaluating you in the classroom. This type of evaluation
if often more destructive than beneficial. You will be evaluated* based on your
ability to plan lessons, create new teaching ideas, self-observe, and improve your classroom teaching.
*There will be no marking or grading of teachers, just a report
covering what you have accomplished during the practicum session.
Additional Information
If you decide not to participate in the practicum session, please feel free to send us some video-taped
lessons, or parts of lessons; we will analyze them and send you comments on
your teaching. We will do this for FREE for a period of a year after you finish
the CertTEYL online course.
